GUWAHATI, India (UCAN) –- As Indian bishops deliberated during their national gathering, young Catholics chipped in by praying for the meeting’s success.
“We prayed that God guide our bishops’ deliberations,” said Linu John, one of eight members of the Jesus Youth movement who conducted round-the-clock adoration of the Blessed Sacrament during the 29th biennial plenary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI).
As many as 163 bishops from India’s 164 dioceses attended the Feb. 24-March 3 plenary that chose Youth for Peace and Harmony as its main theme.
The youths started praying on Feb. 23 as bishops from all over India began assembling at the Salesian-managed Don Bosco Institute in Guwahati, Assam.
John said praying for the bishops and observing them closely has helped her understand the Church better. “I am so happy that I was born in a Catholic family not by my choice but by God’s choice,” she added.
Pradeep Das Joshua, another youth, said he considered it a privilege to pray for “our shepherds” and be associated with “this great event.”
“We can feel the power of their prayers,” said Salesian Sister Marceline, a medical nurse at the venue. “No bishop has fallen ill during this plenary. It is a grace,” she told UCA News.
Archbishop Leo Cornelio of Bhopal, chairperson of the CBCI commission for youth, appreciated the youths’ gesture. “It is their way of supporting and collaborating with the Church,” he told UCA News.
