Cover Story
Can you believe that the Church had already foreseen the need for such a holistic understanding of these times a long time back? Three decades ago, Communio et Progresso declared that “modern media offers new ways of confronting people with the message of the Gospel...” (No.128). Pope Paul VI cautioned that the Church “would feel guilty before the Lord” if it failed to use the new media for evangelization. Pope John Paul II went beyond that, calling upon all to understand this new culture so that “it is not enough to use the media simply to spread the Christian message and the Church’s authentic teaching. It is also necessary to integrate that message into the ‘new culture’ created by modern communications” (Redemptoris Missio; 1990, No.37).
