Jesus Youth Mission Continues to Bring Hope to Harlan County, Kentucky
The Jesus Youth Mission team first began exploring Kentucky in 2019, but it was in the post-COVID years that mission groups started visiting the region consistently. Under the guidance of Bishop John Stowe of the Diocese of Lexington, the mission is focused on three parishes in Harlan County, where Fr. Terrence De Silva has warmly welcomed and supported the team’s efforts. These visits have enabled the organization of numerous weekend missions and extended mission trips, strengthening ties with the local community.
A Region in Need of Healing and Renewal
Once a thriving coal-mining hub, Harlan County has faced economic decline, making it one of the poorest counties in the U.S. With two-thirds of its population having migrated, those who remain face significant financial hardships, addiction, violence, and family breakdowns, leaving many children in foster care. Acknowledging these challenges, prayer has become a central part of every mission trip, with missionaries spending dedicated time in Eucharistic Adoration, interceding for the people and the region.
From Humble Beginnings to a Growing Mission
The mission began with families from nearby areas visiting Harlan to pray and engage in service projects. Volunteers assisted at a local food pantry, supported parish outreach programs, and built friendships with struggling families. Through shared meals and prayer gatherings, the team fostered a sense of trust and community. Other key initiatives include assisting Fr. Terrence with First Communion and Confirmation programs, spreading Christmas joy through caroling, and organizing fellowship meals.
Expanding Outreach with Young Adults and Families
As the mission expanded, young adults and teens began embarking on extended trips of 7-10 days. College students join during spring break, while families participate during Holy Week, immersing themselves in prayer, liturgies, and community service. Activities range from visiting families, hosting preschool programs, and leading confirmation retreats to organizing fellowship dinners and service projects.
Each visit strengthens the Jesus Youth movement’s commitment to serving Kentucky, bringing renewed faith, hope, and love to the people of Harlan County. The mission continues to grow, and with every trip, bonds are deepened, lives are touched, and hearts are set ablaze with the love of Christ.
