The St. Teresa’s Prayer Group in Ernakulam has completed 50 years of vibrant community life, emerging as a significant formative space that contributed to the growth of the Jesus Youth Movement in Kerala and beyond. What began in 1976 as a simple follow-up to a seminar has since shaped generations of young leaders and mission initiatives.
Humble Beginnings
The journey began in June 1976 at St. Teresa’s College, where an orientation on spiritual renewal gathered around 200 participants. Led by Fr. Fio Mascarenhas, Fr. Rufus Perera, and Fr. Marcelino Iragui OCD, the program inspired about forty participants to continue meeting weekly from July 1976, forming the foundation of the prayer group. Supported by the Carmelite Sisters (CSST), the gatherings soon drew many young people.
Formation and Leadership
Fr. Marcelino Iragui, a Carmelite priest and professor at Mangalapuzha Seminary, played a pivotal role in shaping the group. With a strong focus on prayer, Scripture, and community life, he nurtured a generation of committed youth. His emphasis on participatory worship and small-group formation laid a foundation that later resonated deeply within the Jesus Youth spirituality.
A core team of young leaders, including Kochurani Abraham, Stephany, and Edward, ensured continuity, with Fr. Dominic Fernandez OCD supporting the group during Fr. Marcelino’s absence.
Lasting Impact
Over the decades, the prayer group became a quiet yet powerful influence in the emergence and growth of the Jesus Youth Movement. By fostering leadership, community living, and missionary zeal, it helped shape many initiatives across Kerala.
As the group celebrates its golden jubilee, reflections from Dr. Edward Edezhath and fellow members underline a shared gratitude for a journey that continues to inspire faith and mission among young people today.
